I don't know if I even have many readers, but if you do happen to read or randomly stop by today, please don't overlook this post. Nashville needs your prayers.
As you may or may not know, I live in Nashville, and we experienced one of the worst floods on record over this past weekend. Most areas of middle TN got between 13-18 inches of water in a 24-hour period.
Fortunately, I was blessed in that the flood waters did not reach my house. Just a mile down the street from me though, peoples' homes were covered in water, roads were completely washed away, and businesses were forced to shut down.
A lot of Nashville residents are comparing the floods to Katrina...that may be a little extreme, but I will say one thing that a lot of people do not realize, and that is that most of these flood victims do not have flood insurance; no one has had a need for it - until now, when the need is exuberant. Therefore, when you hear on the news that a certain Nashville resident has lost his or her home, that is the absolute truth. In that respect, I do believe this flood event is as grave as Katrina.
I have so many friends and loved ones, members of my church family, co-workers, fellow law students, etc that have been affected by this catastrophe. I know people who have lost their homes, who can't get into their homes and are staying in hotels and shelters, who have lost pets, cars, furniture, and even family members.
I am fully aware that we as a nation have a lot of things going on right now with the oil spill and healthcare reform and the attempted bombing in Times Square. However, a devastating event like this that happens right in your back yard will really wake you up. I am still searching for ways to make myself useful in this situation, and I hope to be able to provide some form of aid to at least one of these victims very soon. Until I figure out just what I can physically do, I can only offer my prayers for all of the victims. I think that may actually be what they need most.
Please, even if you don't have the time/energy/money to provide some form of relief, just pray. Trust me, everyone in this area will be grateful you did.
